Following consultation with numerous members of the Community the Trust has agreed to provide and manage a unique Celebration of Unity Day. This will be to mark the 30th anniversary of the 1984/85 miners strike on April 5th 2014.
The outcome and aftermath of the strike had devastating consequences for our Village and its close Communities. The day’s events will commence with a traditional miners march. This will progress down the village from the car park adjacent to Edlington Top Club past the old pit gates down to the Miners Welfare then back to the Yorkshire Main Commemorative Trust Memorial Garden. Following the speakers in the garden, a new piece of Pit Art will be unveiled; this was purposely created by former miners at Yorkshire Main Colliery, and will be presented to the community.
The Pit Art was created using a steel ring setting obtained from a local Colliery, which has been cut down to 6ft high and will have an inset logo depicting Unity is Strength. This again was produced and designed by former miners at the local Colliery. The logo is taken from both the NUM banners at the Colliery.
This event will be community orientated and will focus on recognising the vital role that the women of Edlington played during the momentous struggle for jobs and our community. Consequently, it has been agreed that they will lead the march carrying the recently recreated Edlington Women against Pit Closure Support Banner.
Following the March there will be an organised Celebration of Unity performance during the day which will involve a number of local bands in the Edlington Top Club. Entertainment will be provided throughout the day which will again focus on inclusive community involvement. A children’s play area will also be provided.
A number of vendors will be invited to provide food and refreshments.
We feel sure you will recognise this event for its historical importance to the culture and heritage of our community and give Edlington a day to enjoy and remember and we look forward to your support.
